Jean Luc Almond

My obsession with the materiality of paint makes the paintings feel like a dialogue between matter and representation, in which matter usually distorts and takes precedence over representation.

I am interested in painting being more than just representational.
I am most fascinated when an image is taken to the point of near dissolution, when its form is put in danger.

The resulting image can appear in a transitional rather than fixed state.

‘His pieces are created through layering multiple paintings on top of each other before scratching away at the surface to reveal phantom damage and repair, his portraits convey a lack of humanity within their subject, like fleeting ghosts of memories.’
